Anthony Tong joined Robin Bridge & John Liu fresh from the University of Hong Kong in 1988 who has been with the firm ever since.
Anthony has a substantial litigation practice in different areas of intellectual property in both Hong Kong and China. Anthony also has substantial international litigation experience and since 2015 he has been the lead counsel for a Hong Kong listed company in a pan-European litigation involving more than 70 proceedings in 15 European countries. Anthony has also overseen and supervised quite a number of trade mark and patent litigations in the US, Europe and Australia including successfully defending a massive ITC patent proceedings in the US in 2019-2020. In addition, Anthony also manages quite a number of local clients’ worldwide trade mark portfolios as well as oversees a lot of international clients’ trade mark portfolios in Greater China.
Anthony has also assisted numerous overseas enterprises to set up businesses in China and Hong Kong and to enter into joint venture agreements with PRC partners. Anthony has been ranked in the 2020 and 2021 World Trademark Review 1000 in the most prestigious Top Tier of both the “Individuals: prosecution and strategy” category and “Individuals: enforcement and litigation”. He is also listed in the single tier “Transactions” in the same publication. In this publication, the editor quoted a happy client who quips: “I give Anthony our very highest rating amongst our outside counsel around the world. Clearly an expert in his field, he provides unsurpassed service and excellent advice. In October 2020, Anthony was appointed by the Secretary and Permanent Secretary of Innovation and Technology of the Government of Hong Kong SAR as a member of the Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (“ASTRI”). The establishment of ASTRI is a major initiative of the HKSAR Government to enhance Hong Kong’s technological development.
Anthony has successfully completed a 6 year maximum term in 2017 as the Deputy Chairman of the Copyright Tribunal of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Copyright Tribunal adjudicates on disputes concerning the terms and conditions of copyright licensing schemes devised by licensing bodies. The Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the tribunal must be qualified for appointment as District Court Judges.
